    Title
nbviewer through 1.0.1 Path Traversal via LocalFileHandler
    Summary
nbviewer through 1.0.1 contains a path traversal vulnerability in LocalFileHandler.can_show() that uses string-prefix comparison instead of proper path validation. Attackers can read files from sibling directories outside the configured root by requesting paths that share the root as a textual prefix, disclosing unintended notebooks and credentials.

    CVE-2026-6658 (GCVE-0-2026-6658)

    Vulnerability from cvelistv5 – Published: 2026-06-26 09:40 – Updated: 2026-06-26 10:19
    VLAI
    Title
    Cross-site Scripting (XSS) in jupyter/nbconvert
    Summary
A vulnerability in jupyter/nbconvert versions <= 7.17.0 allows for Cross-site Scripting (XSS) via unsanitized `text/vnd.mermaid` output in HTML exports. The `data_mermaid` block in `share/templates/lab/base.html.j2` renders `text/vnd.mermaid` cell output directly into HTML without escaping, enabling attackers to inject arbitrary HTML/JavaScript by breaking out of the `<pre>` tag. This vulnerability impacts any server using nbconvert to render notebooks as HTML, allowing attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript in the context of users viewing the HTML export.

    Title
CORS Origin Validation Bypass in jupyter-server
    Summary
A vulnerability in jupyter-server versions 1.12.0 through 2.17.0 allows an attacker to bypass CORS origin validation when the `allow_origin_pat` configuration is used. The issue arises from the use of `re.match()` for validating the `Origin` header, which only anchors at the start of the string. This allows attacker-controlled domains such as `trusted.example.com.evil.com` to pass validation against patterns intended to match `trusted.example.com`. The vulnerability affects multiple locations in the codebase, including CORS headers, WebSocket connections, referer validation, and login redirects, potentially enabling phishing attacks, arbitrary code execution, and unauthorized access to sensitive API responses.

    Vulnerability from cvelistv5 – Published: 2026-06-02 09:11 – Updated: 2026-06-02 12:14
    VLAI
    Title
    Path Traversal in jupyter/jupyter
    Summary
A path traversal vulnerability exists in jupyter-server version 2.17.0 due to an incorrect root directory boundary check in the _get_os_path() function within jupyter_server/services/contents/fileio.py. The check uses startswith(root) without appending a trailing path separator, allowing sibling directories with names starting with the same prefix as root_dir to bypass the check. Additionally, the to_os_path() function in utils.py does not strip ".." from path parts, enabling traversal sequences to bypass the vulnerable check. This vulnerability can lead to unauthorized read/write access to files in sibling directories, potentially exposing sensitive data in shared hosting environments.

    CVE-2026-42557 (GCVE-0-2026-42557)

    Vulnerability from cvelistv5 – Published: 2026-05-13 15:06 – Updated: 2026-08-28 12:04
    VLAI
    Title
jupyterlab: Command linker attributes in HTML enable one-click command execution from untrusted content
    Summary
jupyterlab is an extensible environment for interactive and reproducible computing, based on the Jupyter Notebook Architecture. Prior to 4.5.7, JupyterLab's HTML sanitizer allowlists data-commandlinker-command and data-commandlinker-args on button elements, while CommandLinker listens for all click events on document.body and executes the named command without checking whether the element came from trusted JupyterLab UI. A notebook with a pre-saved HTML cell output containing a deceptive button can trigger arbitrary JupyterLab commands - including arbitrary code execution - on a single user click, without any code being submitted for execution by the user. This vulnerability is fixed in 4.5.7.

    CVE-2026-40171 (GCVE-0-2026-40171)

    Vulnerability from cvelistv5 – Published: 2026-05-06 19:36 – Updated: 2026-05-08 03:55
    VLAI
    Title
Jupyter Notebook and JupyterLab token theft via stored XSS in help command linker
    Summary
In Jupyter Notebook versions 7.0.0 through 7.5.5, JupyterLab versions 4.5.6 and earlier, and the corresponding @jupyter-notebook/help-extension and @jupyterlab/help-extension packages before 7.5.6 and 4.5.7, a stored cross-site scripting issue in the help command linker can be chained with attacker-controlled notebook content to steal authentication tokens with a single click. An attacker can craft a malicious notebook file containing elements that appear indistinguishable from legitimate controls and trigger execution when a user interacts with them. Successful exploitation allows theft of the user's authentication token and complete takeover of the Jupyter session through the REST API, including reading files, creating or modifying files, accessing kernels to execute arbitrary code, and creating terminals for shell access. This issue has been fixed in Notebook 7.5.6, JupyterLab 4.5.7, @jupyter-notebook/help-extension 7.5.6, and @jupyterlab/help-extension 4.5.7. As a workaround, disable the affected help extensions or set allowCommandLinker to false in the sanitizer configuration.

    Title
nbconvert has an Arbitrary File Read via Path Traversal in HTMLExporter Image Embedding
    Summary
The nbconvert tool, jupyter nbconvert, converts Jupyter notebooks to various other formats via Jinja templates. In versions 6.5 through 7.17.0, when `HTMLExporter.embed_images=True`, nbconvert's markdown renderer allows arbitrary file read via path traversal in image references. A malicious notebook can exfiltrate sensitive files from the conversion host by embedding them as base64 data URIs in the output HTML. nbconvert 7.17.1 contains a fix. As a workaround, do not enable `HTMLExporter.embed_images`; it is not enabled by default.

    Summary
The nbconvert tool, jupyter nbconvert, converts Jupyter notebooks to various other formats via Jinja templates. Versions 6.5 through 7.17.0 allow arbitrary file writes to locations outside the intended output directory when processing notebooks containing crafted cell attachment filenames. The `ExtractAttachmentsPreprocessor` passes attachment filenames directly to the filesystem without sanitization, enabling path traversal attacks. This vulnerability provides complete control over both the destination path and file extension. Version 7.17.1 contains a patch.

    Title
nbconvert has an uncontrolled search path that leads to unauthorized code execution on Windows
    Summary
The nbconvert tool, jupyter nbconvert, converts Jupyter notebooks to various other formats via Jinja templates. Versions of nbconvert up to and including 7.16.6 on Windows have a vulnerability in which converting a notebook containing SVG output to a PDF results in unauthorized code execution. Specifically, a third party can create a `inkscape.bat` file that defines a Windows batch script, capable of arbitrary code execution. When a user runs `jupyter nbconvert --to pdf` on a notebook containing SVG output to a PDF on a Windows platform from this directory, the `inkscape.bat` file is run unexpectedly. This issue has been patched in version 7.17.0.

    Title
Jupyter Core on Windows Has Uncontrolled Search Path Element Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability
    Summary
Jupyter Core is a package for the core common functionality of Jupyter projects. When using Jupyter Core prior to version 5.8.0 on Windows, the shared `%PROGRAMDATA%` directory is searched for configuration files (`SYSTEM_CONFIG_PATH` and `SYSTEM_JUPYTER_PATH`), which may allow users to create configuration files affecting other users. Only shared Windows systems with multiple users and unprotected `%PROGRAMDATA%` are affected. Users should upgrade to Jupyter Core version 5.8.0 or later to receive a patch. Some other mitigations are available. As administrator, modify the permissions on the `%PROGRAMDATA%` directory so it is not writable by unauthorized users; or as administrator, create the `%PROGRAMDATA%\jupyter` directory with appropriately restrictive permissions; or as user or administrator, set the `%PROGRAMDATA%` environment variable to a directory with appropriately restrictive permissions (e.g. controlled by administrators _or_ the current user).

    Title
`frame-ancestors: self` grants all users access to formgrader in nbgrader
    Summary
nbgrader is a system for assigning and grading notebooks. Enabling frame-ancestors: 'self' grants any JupyterHub user the ability to extract formgrader content by sending malicious links to users with access to formgrader, at least when using the default JupyterHub configuration of `enable_subdomains = False`. #1915 disables a protection which would allow user Alice to craft a page embedding formgrader in an IFrame. If Bob visits that page, his credentials will be sent and the formgrader page loaded. Because Alice's page is on the same Origin as the formgrader iframe, Javasript on Alice's page has _full access_ to the contents of the page served by formgrader using Bob's credentials. This issue has been addressed in release 0.9.5 and all users are advised to upgrade. Users unable to upgrade may disable `frame-ancestors: self`, or enable per-user and per-service subdomains with `JupyterHub.enable_subdomains = True` (then even if embedding in an IFrame is allowed, the host page does not have access to the contents of the frame).

    Title
Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability in jupyterlab extension template `update-integration-tests` GitHub Action
    Summary
JupyterLab extension template is a `copier` template for JupyterLab extensions. Repositories created using this template with `test` option include `update-integration-tests.yml` workflow which has an RCE vulnerability. Extension authors hosting their code on GitHub are urged to upgrade the template to the latest version. Users who made changes to `update-integration-tests.yml`, accept overwriting of this file and re-apply your changes later. Users may wish to temporarily disable GitHub Actions while working on the upgrade. We recommend rebasing all open pull requests from untrusted users as actions may run using the version from the `main` branch at the time when the pull request was created. Users who are upgrading from template version prior to 4.3.0 may wish to leave out proposed changes to the release workflow for now as it requires additional configuration.

    Title
Jupyter Server Proxy has a reflected XSS issue in host parameter
    Summary
Jupyter Server Proxy allows users to run arbitrary external processes alongside their notebook server and provide authenticated web access to them. Versions of 3.x prior to 3.2.4 and 4.x prior to 4.2.0 have a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) issue. The `/proxy` endpoint accepts a `host` path segment in the format `/proxy/<host>`. When this endpoint is called with an invalid `host` value, `jupyter-server-proxy` replies with a response that includes the value of `host`, without sanitization [2]. A third-party actor can leverage this by sending a phishing link with an invalid `host` value containing custom JavaScript to a user. When the user clicks this phishing link, the browser renders the response of `GET /proxy/<host>`, which runs the custom JavaScript contained in `host` set by the actor. As any arbitrary JavaScript can be run after the user clicks on a phishing link, this issue permits extensive access to the user's JupyterLab instance for an actor. Patches are included in versions 4.2.0 and 3.2.4. As a workaround, server operators who are unable to upgrade can disable the `jupyter-server-proxy` extension.

    Vulnerability from cvelistv5 – Published: 2024-06-06 15:37 – Updated: 2024-08-02 03:07
    VLAI
    Title
Jupyter server on Windows discloses Windows user password hash
    Summary
The Jupyter Server provides the backend for Jupyter web applications. Jupyter Server on Windows has a vulnerability that lets unauthenticated attackers leak the NTLMv2 password hash of the Windows user running the Jupyter server. An attacker can crack this password to gain access to the Windows machine hosting the Jupyter server, or access other network-accessible machines or 3rd party services using that credential. Or an attacker perform an NTLM relay attack without cracking the credential to gain access to other network-accessible machines. This vulnerability is fixed in 2.14.1.

    Title
nbconvert vulnerable to cross-site scripting (XSS) via multiple exploit paths
    Summary
The GitHub Security Lab discovered sixteen ways to exploit a cross-site scripting vulnerability in nbconvert. When using nbconvert to generate an HTML version of a user-controllable notebook, it is possible to inject arbitrary HTML which may lead to cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities if these HTML notebooks are served by a web server (eg: nbviewer).

    Title
    Forced Browsing in Jupyter Notebook
    Summary
Jupyter Notebook is a web-based notebook environment for interactive computing. Prior to version 6.4.12, authenticated requests to the notebook server with `ContentsManager.allow_hidden = False` only prevented listing the contents of hidden directories, not accessing individual hidden files or files in hidden directories (i.e. hidden files were 'hidden' but not 'inaccessible'). This could lead to notebook configurations allowing authenticated access to files that may reasonably be expected to be disallowed. Because fully authenticated requests are required, this is of relatively low impact. But if a server's root directory contains sensitive files whose only protection from the server is being hidden (e.g. `~/.ssh` while serving $HOME), then any authenticated requests could access files if their names are guessable. Such contexts also necessarily have full access to the server and therefore execution permissions, which also generally grants access to all the same files. So this does not generally result in any privilege escalation or increase in information access, only an additional, unintended means by which the files could be accessed. Version 6.4.12 contains a patch for this issue. There are currently no known workarounds.

    Vulnerability from cvelistv5 – Published: 2022-03-31 22:35 – Updated: 2025-04-23 18:43

    Title
Insertion of Sensitive Information into Log File affects Jupyter Notebook
    Summary
The Jupyter notebook is a web-based notebook environment for interactive computing. Prior to version 6.4.9, unauthorized actors can access sensitive information from server logs. Anytime a 5xx error is triggered, the auth cookie and other header values are recorded in Jupyter server logs by default. Considering these logs do not require root access, an attacker can monitor these logs, steal sensitive auth/cookie information, and gain access to the Jupyter server. Jupyter notebook version 6.4.x contains a patch for this issue. There are currently no known workarounds.

    Title
    Stored XSS in Jupyter nbdime
    Summary
nbdime provides tools for diffing and merging of Jupyter Notebooks. In affected versions a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) issue exists within the Jupyter-owned nbdime project. It appears that when reading the file name and path from disk, the extension does not sanitize the string it constructs before returning it to be displayed. The diffNotebookCheckpoint function within nbdime causes this issue. When attempting to display the name of the local notebook (diffNotebookCheckpoint), nbdime appears to simply append .ipynb to the name of the input file. The NbdimeWidget is then created, and the base string is passed through to the request API function. From there, the frontend simply renders the HTML tag and anything along with it. Users are advised to patch to the most recent version of the affected product.

Users are advised to patch to the most recent version of the affected product."

    CVE-2021-32798 (GCVE-0-2021-32798)

    Vulnerability from cvelistv5 – Published: 2021-08-09 20:50 – Updated: 2024-08-03 23:33
    VLAI
    Title
Failure to Sanitize Special Elements into a Different Plane (Special Element Injection) in notebook
    Summary
The Jupyter notebook is a web-based notebook environment for interactive computing. In affected versions untrusted notebook can execute code on load. Jupyter Notebook uses a deprecated version of Google Caja to sanitize user inputs. A public Caja bypass can be used to trigger an XSS when a victim opens a malicious ipynb document in Jupyter Notebook. The XSS allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the victim computer using Jupyter APIs.

    Vulnerability from cvelistv5 – Published: 2020-11-24 21:10 – Updated: 2024-08-04 15:56
    VLAI
    Title
    Open redirect in Jupyter Server
    Summary
Jupyter Server before version 1.0.6 has an Open redirect vulnerability. A maliciously crafted link to a jupyter server could redirect the browser to a different website. All jupyter servers are technically affected, however, these maliciously crafted links can only be reasonably made for known jupyter server hosts. A link to your jupyter server may appear safe, but ultimately redirect to a spoofed server on the public internet.

    CVE-2020-26215 (GCVE-0-2020-26215)

    Vulnerability from cvelistv5 – Published: 2020-11-18 21:20 – Updated: 2024-08-04 15:49
    VLAI
    Title
    Open redirect in Jupyter Notebook
    Summary
Jupyter Notebook before version 6.1.5 has an Open redirect vulnerability. A maliciously crafted link to a notebook server could redirect the browser to a different website. All notebook servers are technically affected, however, these maliciously crafted links can only be reasonably made for known notebook server hosts. A link to your notebook server may appear safe, but ultimately redirect to a spoofed server on the public internet. The issue is patched in version 6.1.5.
